- Kickin' It For Kids With Cancer | Austin Hatcher Foundation For Pediatric Cancer
WHAT IS KICKIN' IT FOR KIDS WITH CANCER? For the past 13 years, the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer has partnered with the women's soccer team at Lee University to host Kickin' It for Kids with Cancer, a fundraiser that also doubles as a fun night out for the families the foundation serves. We were fortunate to hold the Kickin' It for Kids With Cancer game in 2023 to raise funds and awareness, while also providing families with a special and memorable evening of fun, food, and soccer. In the weeks preceding the event, the team helped raise money by selling special shirts to be worn at the game and in the community. PAST BUILDS SEE THIS BUILD 2021 KEIKI COBRA Each year at the Austin Hatcher Foundation, many of our families take part in our car builds as part of our Industrial Arts Therapy Program. Some of the builds are from “scratch” while others are modifications, but pediatric cancer patients, survivors, and their families get to participate in each and every one of the builds we do. Our goal is to enhance therapeutic services with fun and exciting real-world activities. This part of our Industrial Arts Therapy Program allows pediatric cancer patients, survivors, and their families to develop functional skill sets while also fostering interest in the automotive industry. “As kids undergo chemo or radiation therapy, they can lose dexterity,” said Austin Hatcher Foundation Chairman Jim Osborn. “They’re often removed from their school and social environment more frequently. Diversionary therapy projects like this build with Ford provide an opportunity to have fun with family and friends, while also improving deficits that are a side effect of cancer treatment.” Our automotive builds are all eventually auctioned to raise additional funds and awareness for the foundation and its partners. In the meantime, the foundation uses the vehicle to support its innovative Healthy Lifestyles program, which uses automotive-based metaphors to educate children about key lifestyle habits that can lower the risk for certain types of cancer. A program added to this organization, known as the Teen Ambassador Program, works alongside the Austin Hatcher Foundation in creating a way to allow teens in the community to be more involved in serving others. Out of this group, several ambassadors were inspired to take on the task of starting a fundraiser in 2023 for the Austin Hatcher Foundation, known as the Hit It For Hatch Tennis Tournament. This tournament, created by ambassadors who share a love for tennis, was a creative way for kids and adults to be involved in a good cause, as well as bring more awareness to the work of the Austin Hatcher Foundation. In 2024, the Teen Ambassadors will be hosting the inaugural Hit It For Hatch Series - consisting of a Tennis, Pickleball, and Volleyball Tournament!
