It was such an amazing day! At Grief Camp children made memory boxes and buttons in art therapy, hung out with therapy dogs, drummed & danced in music therapy, and shared messages on the "Grief-itti" wall. They also had the opportunity to talk about loved ones who have passed and learn coping skills to deal with grief. They learned that everyone experiences grief differently and and that no one is alone on that journey. Thank you to The Children's Hospital at Erlanger and to every volunteer, instructor, and guest who made Grief Camp such a success. To play, press and hold the enter key. Out of this group, several ambassadors were inspired to take on the task of starting a fundraiser in 2023 for the Austin Hatcher Foundation, known as the Hit It For Hatch Tennis Tournament. This tournament, created by ambassadors who share a love for tennis, was a creative way for kids and adults to be involved in a good cause, as well as bring more awareness to the work of the Austin Hatcher Foundation. What a wonderful activity that helps my son focus on something positive like drumming and music. It truly helped him to rest and relax during a day that was so stressful." -Dad of newly diagnosed 6-year-old male patient “As a professional drummer, I always had aspirations of utilizing music and drumming as a therapeutic tool. The Austin Hatcher Foundation made this dream a reality when they gave me the opportunity to use music and drumming to positively impact children and their families walking through cancer. As I have drummed with patients of all ages, I have been amazed how music and drumming has broken through barriers - offering children and their families a way to communicate without every saying a word, providing children with a diversion from pain and stress surrounding their treatment, and creating an outlet for children to express themselves creatively. I count it a true privilege to be on the Austin Hatcher Foundation and Hope and Cope family support teams at the Alabama Center for childhood cancer and blood disorders, which is a partnership between the UAB Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Children’s of Alabama.” -Walker Wright Music Therapist (Children's of Alabama)
